London Planetree (Platanus x acerifolia)
London planetree is non-nativ. It is one of the most widely used and reliable urban shade trees in North America, valued for its exceptional tolerance of pollution, compacted soils, and general city stress. In Buffalo, it performs especially well as a large street and boulevard tree, providing broad canopy cover and strong long-term shade. It is a hybrid of American sycamore and oriental plane, combining durability with adaptability.

How to Care for Me?
London planetree performs best in full sun and adapts to a wide range of soil types. Water regularly during the first 2–3 years to develop a strong root system. After establishment, it generally only needs supplemental watering during extended dry periods. Prune in late winter to maintain structure and remove any dead, damaged, or crossing branches. In urban settings, periodic pruning may be needed to manage its large size and spreading habit.
