Maakia (Maakia amurensis)

Maakia is a small, durable ornamental shade tree valued for its attractive bark, fragrant summer flowers, and exceptional tolerance of urban conditions. In cities like Buffalo, it is highly regarded as a low-maintenance street and landscape tree because it adapts well to a wide range of soils and environmental stresses. Its moderate size makes it an excellent choice for residential properties, streetscapes, and smaller planting spaces where larger shade trees may not fit.

Key Features:

  • Fragrant, dull white flower clusters that bloom in late spring to early summer

  • Attractive coppery-bronze bark that exfoliates with age

  • Broad, rounded canopy with dark olive-green compound leaves

How to Care for Me?

Maakia grows best in full sun to partial shade and prefers well-drained soils, but tolerates drought, urban pollution, and challenging site conditions better than many ornamental trees. Full sun encourages the best flowering and overall form. Water regularly during the first 2–3 years to establish a strong root system. After establishment, supplemental watering is generally only needed during extended dry periods. Prune when young to develop good structure, as larger pruning cuts heal slowly. If pruning is needed, it is best done in summer after flowering rather than during winter.
