Hybrid elm (Ulmus x spp.)

Hybrid elms are a group of elm cultivars developed by crossing different elm species to combine the beauty of traditional elms with improved disease resistance and urban adaptability. In cities like Buffalo, hybrid elm cultivars such as “Accolade” and “Heritage” are highly valued for their tolerance of compacted soils, pollution, road salt, and excellent resistance to Dutch elm disease, making them a dependable choice for streets, parks, campuses, and residential landscapes.

Key Features:

  • Strong resistance to Dutch elm disease in many modern cultivars

  • Fast-growing shade trees with attractive vase-shaped or arching canopies

  • Tolerant of heat, drought, and road salt once established

How to Care for Me?

Hybrid elms perform best in full sun and adapt well to a wide range of soil conditions, including clay, sandy, and urban soils. Most cultivars are highly tolerant of environmental stress and establish quickly. Water regularly during the first 2–3 years to develop a strong root system. After establishment, supplemental watering is generally only needed during prolonged dry periods. Prune in late winter to establish strong branch structure.
