Cornelian cherry (Cornus mas)

Cornelian cherry is a small ornamental tree or large shrub prized for its early spring flowers, attractive fruit, and adaptability to urban landscapes. In cities like Buffalo, it is valued for providing color and interest long before most trees begin to bloom. Its compact size makes it an excellent choice for residential yards, streetscapes, parks, and garden settings where a smaller tree is desired. Despite its common name, it is not a true cherry, though it produces edible red fruits that resemble cherries.

Key Features:

  • Bright yellow flowers that bloom in late winter to early spring before leaves emerge

  • Glossy green foliage that turns reddish-purple in fall

  • Produces edible bright red fruits that attract birds and wildlife

How to Care for Me?

Cornelian cherry grows best in full sun to partial shade and prefers well-drained soils but tolerates urban conditions well once established. Water regularly during the first 2–3 years to establish a healthy root system. After establishment, it is moderately drought-tolerant. Prune in late winter or immediately after flowering if shaping is needed. This species naturally develops an attractive rounded form and typically requires little maintenance. Promptly remove root suckers to control spread.
