Swamp White Oak (Quercus bicolor)
Swamp white oak is a strong, long-lived native oak well adapted to both wet and upland urban conditions. In cities like Buffalo, it is especially valuable for its tolerance of poorly drained soils, road salt exposure, and fluctuating moisture levels. It is a highly reliable shade tree for streets, parks, and stormwater-adjacent landscapes where other oaks may struggle.

How to Care for Me?
Swamp white oak prefers full sun and is one of the most adaptable native oaks for both wet and average soil conditions. Water regularly during the first 2–3 years to support deep root development. After establishment, it is moderately drought-tolerant but benefits from occasional deep watering during extended dry periods. Prune in late winter to establish strong structure when young and remove any crossing or weak branches.
