Native to Japan, Korea, and eastern Russia, it is one of the most cold-hardy flowering cherries and performs well in climates like Buffalo's. How to Care for Me?
Sargent cherry performs best in full sun and fertile, moist, well-drained soils. It does not tolerate poorly drained conditions. Full sunlight promotes the heaviest flowering, best fall color, and healthiest growth. Water regularly during the first 2–3 years to establish a strong root system. After establishment, provide supplemental watering during extended dry periods. Prune only as needed immediately after flowering to remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches. Avoid excessive pruning, as flowering cherries can be susceptible to disease entry through pruning wounds.
