River birch ‘Heritage’ is a durable, fast-growing native shade tree especially valued for its ornamental bark and strong adaptability to wet or challenging urban sites. In cities like Buffalo, it performs well in areas with periodic flooding, heavy soils, and variable moisture conditions. The ‘Heritage’ cultivar is selected for its especially attractive peeling bark and improved vigor compared to the straight species. It is an excellent choice for streets, parks, rain gardens, and low-lying areas where other trees may struggle.

How to Care for Me?

River birch ‘Heritage’ prefers full sun to partial shade and does best in moist, slightly acidic soils. Water regularly during the first 2–3 years to help establish a strong root system. After establishment, it still benefits from occasional deep watering during dry periods, especially in sandy or exposed sites. Prune in late winter if needed to remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches.
