Ginko-Autumn Gold (Ginkgo biloba)

Ginkgo ‘Autumn Gold’ is a male selection of the ancient ginkgo tree, widely planted in urban environments for its exceptional toughness, reliability, and striking fall color. In cities like Buffalo, it is especially valued for its ability to thrive in compacted soils, pollution, heat, and drought once established. The ‘Autumn Gold’ cultivar is preferred because it does not produce messy fruit.

Key Features:

  • Golden-yellow fall color that appears reliably each year

  • Unique fan-shaped leaves with a distinct, prehistoric appearance

  • Pest- and disease-resistant with very low maintenance needs

How to Care for Me?

Ginkgo ‘Autumn Gold’ prefers full sun and adapts to nearly any well-drained soil. Once established, it is highly drought-tolerant and one of the most resilient street trees available. Water regularly during the first 2–3 years to support root establishment. After that, it typically requires little to no supplemental watering except during extended drought. Prune in late winter if needed to maintain a strong central leader and remove any damaged or crossing branches.
