How it works?
Anyone in an area of the city defined as an “environmental justice area” (see if you’re eligible here), can request a tree be planted in front of the home or apartment where they live.
Both homeowners and residents are encouraged to request trees. Tree requests need to go through the City’s 311 program (if you don’t live in an environmental justice area, you can still request a tree, you just won’t get other services specific to this program).
Once you request a tree via 311, the area fronting your residence will be assessed by the City’s Forestry Division to ensure there is sufficient space for a tree to be planted. If there is, your request will go onto the City’s schedule for tree planting, which will occur in the fall of 2025.
In future years of the program, plantings will occur in both the spring and fall (because these are the times of year suitable to plant trees).
After your tree is planted, a City of Buffalo Forestry employee or contractor will come out to water your tree 15 times in each of the two years following planting.
This critical maintenance is essential to ensure your tree survives over the long run.
